The Makerhack Experience
“The best learning moments happen
when you are challenged with an open
question and you need to struggle to
find a creative solution.
Eduhack provides an environment where this
type of learning is at the heart of the event and is
a recommended experience even just for the fun
of being innovative and trying something new.”
CEO, UrbanZee
Aschwin van der Woude
In the heart of innovation,
where technology meets
creativity, Eduhack Makerhack
emerged as a groundbreaking
event that blended the dynamic
world of makerspaces with the
collaborative, intensive problem-
solving approach of hackathons.
This unique fusion challenged
participants to delve deep into maker
technology, applying it across various
stages of the innovation process
from ideation and
prototyping to marketing
and pitching their solutions.
Eduhack Makerhack set its sights
on two ambitious challenges:
integrating satellite data and
Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) in education,
and addressing the concepts
of the 6th economic wave.
These challenges were presented by PaikkaOppi Plus, SYKE, and Esri Finland,
positioning Makerhack as a pivotal part of
"Hacking the 6th Wave," a developmental
project funded by the Finnish National
Agency for Education.
The event found its home at
The HIVE – Turku Game Hub,
a nexus for game designers
and developers.
It welcomed an eclectic mix of participants, including students from primary to higher education, teachers, and developers, forming 11 teams with around 60 participants in total.
Workshops early in the event equipped
teams with essential skills in project
management and design processes,
ensuring a solid start.
The XR room, powered by FIVR
and facilitated by Juhani Vilponen,
served as a technological
playground,
introducing many to
Augmented Reality (AR)
and Virtual Reality (VR)
for the first time, sparking
excitement and broadening
horizons about the potential
of these technologies.
Makerhack epitomised the
importance of sharing resources
and fostering open collaboration
across different sectors.
With an array of tools, technology, and recycled materials at their disposal, teams worked across disciplines, drawing on the expertise of mentors from diverse fields.
The involvement of a wide range of
partners added depth and diversity,
creating a fertile environment for
innovation.
The atmosphere was electric,
charged with a collective eagerness
to learn and innovate.
The challenge to incorporate
maker tools and materials
was enthusiastically accepted
by all teams, culminating in
tangible creations and
compelling pitches.
The creativity and efforts of each team
were celebrated by partners, showcasing
how competition can serve as a powerful
catalyst for creativity and pushing
boundaries.
Through the hackathon
teams learned to devise
extraordinary solutions to
complex problems, such as
the 6th economic wave and
resource scarcity.
A significant outcome of Eduhack
Makerhack was the empowerment
of participating teachers.
Having experienced the hackathon process and mentored the teams, these educators went on to organise and facilitate their hackathons, like Greenhack.
This ripple effect of innovation in
education has been a foundational goal,
aiming to empower grassroots
stakeholders to pioneer
educational innovation.
For young people poised at the brink
of shaping their futures,
the International Entrepreneurship
Education programme offers a
gateway to not just learning about
entrepreneurship but embodying it.
