The "Hacking the 6th Wave" Project
“In the pursuit of integrating real-world challenges and the latest technological advancements into the educational experience, the "Hacking the 6th Wave" project emerged as a pioneering initiative in Finland.
Aimed at fostering collaboration among upper secondary schools, universities, and companies, the project was inspired by the global economic shift towards smart, resource-wise solutions — often referred to as the sixth wave of innovation.
This initiative not only created a vibrant collaborative network among teachers from various schools but also offered students a unique opportunity to work closely with industry and higher education, preparing them for future challenges and opportunities.
"Hacking the 6th Wave" successfully
brought together teacher training
schools from Helsinki, Tampere, Turku,
and Vaasa, along with upper secondary
schools from Salo and Huittinen.
This collaboration provided a rich, diverse platform for students and teachers to engage in the project.
An interesting twist was the challenge
posed to students to find organisations
willing to participate,
participate, thereby giving them
a proactive role in shaping their
educational journey.
The project's core activity revolved
around a series of four distinctive
hackathons, each with its unique
theme and set of objectives:
Kicking off in October 2017, this 2-day event was where teams brainstormed challenges for participating organisations.
In the six months that followed, they worked on crafting solutions to these challenges, blending the lines between education, industry, and innovation.
By May 2018, teams were ready to pitch their solutions and develop prototypes using technology.
This hands-on approach provided tangible experience in technological development and problem-solving.
Focused on environmental solutions,
the 32-hour hackathon in May 2019 tackled climate change,
showcasing the project's commitment to global challenges and sustainable solutions.
As a unique twist, September 2019 saw a hackathon dedicated to upper secondary school teachers in Turku
aimed at integrating the new curriculum through local solutions and introducing hackathons as a pedagogical tool.
Each hackathon emerged as a
catalyst for student development,
fueling motivation, innovation, and
a sense of responsibility.
Beyond academic achievements, participants learned to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, thereby understanding the practical implications of their studies.
These events
underscored the power
of sustainable innovation
and the importance of
collaborative learning in
addressing global challenges.
The impact of the
"Hacking the 6th Wave" project extended
beyond the hackathons.
Teachers, inspired by the active
engagement and cross-curricular
collaboration fostered by these events,
began to organise hackathons within
their schools.
This initiative not only spread
a new culture of learning
but also highlighted the effectiveness of hackathons in bridging theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The project has left a lasting legacy,
encouraging continuous innovation,
collaboration, and a forward-thinking
approach in education.
"Hacking the 6th Wave" stands as a
testament to the transformative potential
of integrating innovation-driven projects
into the educational system.
By creating a bridge between students,
and industry experts, the project has laid the groundwork for a new era of education that prioritises real-world challenges, collaborative learning, and technological innovation.
As this new culture of learning continues to
spread, it promises to inspire future generations
to think creatively, act sustainably, and innovate
boldly in their pursuit of solutions to the world's
most pressing problems.
